WALKING THE ALGARVE FROM CASTRO MARIM

Walk and explore the Algarve's open countryside with pretty villages, historic monuments and recognized natural reserve areas like Resaerva natural do Sapal de Castro Marim.
The Algarve is famous for its fine beaches, golf courses and beautiful coastline but, it is generally not thought of in terms of open countryside; it is however truly wonderful rambling country.
We will explore the surrounding villages, located on fertile limestone and characterized by an abundance of orange and lemon groves, olive, carob, fig and almond trees scattered in fields full of flowers.
keen bird-watchers may wish to visit Castro Marim in the fens and marshes of the “Reserva Natural do Sapal “, famous for their flamingos, or enjoy other local sightseeing tours.
Castro Marim Local Area
The historic town of Castro Marim with castle and fort, and the local nature reserve of over 2000 hectares is less than 5 min away. The first settlements in this area date back to approximately 5000 BC. During this time Castro Marim was closer to the sea . For thousands of years it was a port for the ships sailing up the Guadiana River . Phoenicians and Romans where present here, and a Roman road connected this area with Lisbon, running in parallel to the Guadiana River and passing Alcoutim, Mértola and Beja. During the Moorish occupation a fortified structure existed, that became the core of the present castle. Due to the strategic position of the town on border with the kingdom of Castile, Castro Marim became the headquarters of the Order of Christ after the Christian reconquest. The protected wetlands near Castro Marim attract many species of birds and are one of the Algarve's best wildlife sanctuaries.
