West Algarve - Portimao
Portimão on the banks of the river Arade was traditionally a centre for sardine fishing and processing. Today the city’s old and once bustling fishing docks have been remarkably transformed into a scenic promenade, leading to the quaint and tree-lined plazas of the old town.
Bordering this are pleasant pedestrian shopping streets, a series of historic buildings, and a tantalising selection of cafés, bars, and restaurants.
Portimão has a low-key and relaxed ambience with a wonderful atmosphere. The adjoining Praia da Rocha is one of the most scenic and famous beaches in the Algarve.
Portimão and Praia da Rocha are ideally placed to enable us to explore this fascinating part of the Algarve.
We have a wonderful set of walks with a very interesting mix of ambiances.
The Alvor estuary, a protected natural haven were we'll use quiet paths and lanes to take us through a variety of landscapes from salt marshes, farmland, pastures and orchards.
Stunning coastal walks in superb sandy beaches and dramatic headlands leads us to charming traditional villages. The itinerary will also pass through Silves, the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve.
The rolling hillsides just inland from Portimão enables us to visit and appreciate an area hidden from normal tourism, giving an insight into the traditional Algarvian way of life as we walk through ancient farmland, smallholdings and the “dry” orchards so typical of this area.
