BOOK TOUR Ref. 12000G _ Grade: Moderate 4/8
Combining a great walking country, where geology meets industrial archaeology, and the best birding spots, this tour has been specifically designed to give you the chance of enjoying the very best of the Alentejo region of Portugal - from the bird wildlife to the geology and history, plus a great hotel.
Add to this a range of varied and beautiful landscapes, a rich history, friendly people and some fine food and wine, and you have the makings of a great week!
The best way to see the region is by following the excellent walks provided.
Walk in ancient landscapes, with only the sound of birds and the occasional goat or sheep bell is a rare treat in this day and age, continue walking and listening to the lush orchestration of the birdsong: the melodic call of a blackcap warbler, the scratchy song of canary-like serine and the loud cawing of a flock of Iberian azure-winged magpies (here, an endemic species).
Each walk is full of colour, plants, wildlife and history and all are different with some unique sights. Each day’s walk highlights the contrasting landscape and wildlife of the region.
This tour was put together for the liking of those who have a special interest in walking/gastronomy/nature and wine.
The hotel is based on the Victorian buildings of the former British mining interests that used to dominate the area. There are two enormous lakes, the surrounding area, and the ever present Guadiana River. The "Palácio" (former "manor house") is an unusual example of the symbiosis of traditional Alentejo building style and English late-Victorian decorative style and techniques.
