Emerald Coast

Explore the dramatic beauty of the Atlantic coast in the north west corner of Portugal, renowned for its lush, green landscape, gentle sea breezes, and of course, great beaches.

Mountains, lush green countryside, beautiful beaches and the sparkling "vinho verde", this tour is in an area with captivating scenery, once seen, never forgotten.

The region's traditions are rooted in fishing and, interestingly, sea weed harvesting, and it’s also an area where the clean atmosphere means that the stars still shine in all their glory when the sun has gone down, quite a rarity these days in Europe.

MORE INFO Ref. 1800G _ Grade: Moderate 4/8

Our base for the week will be Vila Praia de Ancora, one of many eyecatching towns on this wonderful coast in the north west corner of Portugal.

Our time will be spent exploring our base, walking the coast line, crossing over the Rio Minho in a delightful small chain ferry into Galicia to visit the Mountain of Santa Tecla with its sanctuary and its celtic settlements.
Other walks will take us into the mountains of the Serra d’Agra using old tracks which wind through the landscape and link the numerous old mountain villages.

Vila Praia de Ancora has much to offer: wonderful walks along vine covered lanes, through the fragrant pinewoods of the Serra d’Agra, or again through the ancient local villages where the traditional way of life still exists.

In between, and after the walks, there will be time to relax on the area’s stunning beaches, or enjoy the sunset over the sea while savouring the local cuisine in the town’s main square, possibly with a glass of the local fizz, Vinho Verde, to celebrate your holiday with.

The area has been inhabited since pre-historic times, and is rich in natural and cultural history ranging from Neolithic to Roman times, with villages full of history for us to visit.
